I love the Loch Fyne in Nottingham and just had to try the Norwich one out when I went to see Mary Poppins at the theatre there on Saturday.

The decor is staple Loch Fyne, white walls, light and airy, and a fish counter at the back was stocked full of Salmon and Oysters. It wasn’t particularly busy as the Lord Mayors parade was happening, but there were still a few tables occupied.

With 3 separate menus to choose from, for the first time in any restaurant, I found it hard to choose. It took me at least 10 minutes and I kept bouncing between a few combinations.

They had grilled sardines on the ‘real stars of Europe’ menu, crispy sprats and king prawn spaghetti on the ‘July set menu’ with 2 courses at £10.95 and salt & pepper squid and a crab & lobster burger from the à la carte menu, which I actually went for.

The salt & pepper squid came with Szechuan peppercorn, sesame seeds and chilli jam and was delicious. The squid was crisp on the outside and like butter on the inside, no real need to chew as it melted in the mouth. The sauce was a pleasant surprise, I was expecting a sweet chilli sauce but couldn’t have been more wrong. It had a little kick but not too hot, and was fruity. The spring onion was crunchy and lovely.

The crab & lobster burger, in a seeded brioche bun was really refreshing. The crab patty was a little overdone but it didn’t detract from the flavour and the grilled lobster meat complimented it perfectly. A large dollop of cocktail sauce and crisp french fries completed it.

Service was speedy and served with a smile. the lady that served up couldn’t have been more attentive, and when my sister switched her main course half way through the starters it really felt as though it was no trouble.

It was one of the best lunch meals I have ever had, and I can’t wait to go back and sample more of the menu.
