A few weeks ago Sushimania opened up right round the corner from my work. I did wonder whether with the pre-existing Yo Sushi and Bonsai to name but two, would there be room for another sushi restaurant in the city?
Located in the old Ask Italian restaurant in Chapel Bar, Sushimania has a small entrance and bar and when you ascend the staircase you come into the main restaurant. It also has a large kitchen at the back. I am not sure if you can watch the chefs prepare the food as I only nipped in for a takeaway.
The menu is vast, accounting for all tastes. Along with the usual sushi there are also tofu dishes, salads, tempura, an A La Carte menu and various noodle, donburi and rice dishes.
What did I order?
As it was lunchtime, I didn’t want to be stuffed silly and so opted for a range of sushi along with my favourite Japanese snack; pumpkin croquette. I didn’t expect there to be three large croquette, these were fantastic value for money. Just out of the fryer they were piping hot and crisp, with a light fluffy centre. They came with a lovely dipping sauce, I think it was tonkatsu.
The salmon and avocado temaki (rice and filling wrapped in a seaweed handroll) was full of salmon. The salmon was light and buttery, and the seaweed was crisp and flavoursome.
The Prawn Katsu & Avocado Uramaki rolls (prawn and avocado wrapped in seaweed and then a layer of rice and fish roe) were delicious and again a firm favourite of mine. I love the way the roe bursts in your mouth, leaving you with a fresh fishy aftertaste.
The Yakitori Kushiyaki (chicken skewers) were really juicy, the chicken perfectly cooked and although small were great value.
The only thing that was a little ‘meh’ was the miso soup. It was just a little tasteless which was a shame as I love miso. I wouldn’t have it again and would spend my £2.40 on something else.
I spent just under £20 (pretty standard for this amount of food in a Japanese restaurant) and thought that the portion sizes were fantastic. I will definitely go again. They have a special offer on at the moment of 50% off food at lunchtime and after 10pm. This is from the A La Carte menu only (although I am not sure what this covers). There is also an ‘all you can eat’ menu for £16.80 including lots of favourites such as nigiri, sashimi and tempura. It is only available to eat in and there are some restrictions but it is well worth it if you like sushi!
You can find Sushimania on TWITTER and their WEBSITE and also check out the all you can eat menu HERE
I went here for lunch yesterday as they have 2 for 1 on. £10 and had SO much food – the skewers were incredibly tasty. The dragon rolls and the tori kore age were an absolute highlight though!
Ooh I’m going to go back for the 241 then!! Thanks for the heads up xx
I really want to try Sushimania, I adore Sushi and it seems such good value!
It’s brilliant! Definitely go!
